Choosing your base along the Lekki–Epe corridor
Lekki runs roughly 50km from Victoria Island's edge to the Lekki Conservation Centre and beyond, so where you sleep decides your weekend. The first phase, close to the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge and Admiralty Way, suits travellers who want restaurants, supermarkets and short hops to Landmark Beach; rooms here sit at the higher end of the mid-range. Phase 1 also gives you easy access to the Lekki Toll Gate and the road south toward Ajah, which matters on Friday evenings when traffic stacks up.
Further along, around Ikate and Chevron Drive, you trade walkability for space and quieter nights. The Lekki Conservation Centre sits near Km 19 on the Lekki–Epe Expressway, and hotels within 10–15 minutes of it are ideal if the canopy walkway is your priority. Expect a modest price drop compared with Phase 1, but budget for taxis: nothing here is comfortably walkable after dark. I would book Ikate for a two-night stay and Phase 1 for a single night before an early flight.
Beaches, canopy walks and the winter advantage
Winter in Lagos means the dry season, roughly November to March, with less rain and clearer skies than the humid months. That is the window for Landmark Beach near the Link Bridge, where day passes and loungers are straightforward to arrange, and for the longer run out to Elegushi Beach off Lekki Phase 1. Onyeka and Okun Ajah beaches, further east, are quieter and cheaper but need a car and a driver who knows the access roads.
The Lekki Conservation Centre deserves a half-day: the canopy walkway stretches over the mangrove, and early morning is cooler and less crowded. Pair it with the Lekki Market for craft shopping, or the Nike Art Gallery on Lekki–Epe Expressway if contemporary Nigerian art appeals. Skip beach-hopping on Saturday afternoons in December, when Landmark and Elegushi fill quickly and parking becomes a negotiation. Sunday mornings are calmer and the light is better for photographs.
Getting around without losing your weekend
Traffic is the single biggest planning factor. The Lekki Toll Gate and the Lekki–Epe Expressway can turn a 20-minute hop into an hour between 7am and 10am and again from 4pm to 8pm. Schedule the Conservation Centre for opening time, keep afternoons for the beach or the hotel pool, and travel toward Victoria Island only outside peak hours. Ride-hailing apps work well in Phase 1 and Ikate; further east around Ajah, availability thins after 9pm, so arrange your return trip in advance.
A car with a driver for one full day is the most efficient way to cover the Conservation Centre, a beach and the art gallery in a single loop. If you prefer to stay on foot, base yourself on Admiralty Way, where restaurants, cafes and shops cluster, and use short rides for the beach. The Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge makes Victoria Island reachable in about 15–20 minutes outside rush hour, useful if you want one evening in the city.
Where I would book, and what to skip
For a first Lekki weekend, I would book a mid-range hotel in Lekki Phase 1, within walking distance of Admiralty Way and 10 minutes from Landmark Beach. It balances access, dining and the Link Bridge, and the winter weather makes the beach genuinely usable. For a longer stay focused on nature, Ikate or Chevron Drive wins: calmer nights, closer to the Conservation Centre, and better value per night. Book two to three weeks ahead for December and January, when Lagosians and returning visitors push weekend occupancy up.
Skip the idea of covering Lagos Island and Lekki in the same day without a car, and skip late-afternoon beach trips on Saturdays in high season. Third Mainland Bridge crossings, if your plans include the mainland, are best left for midday. Keep cash small-denomination for beach parking and market stalls, carry water for the canopy walk, and confirm your hotel's power and water arrangements directly. A quiet Friday arrival, a Saturday morning canopy walk and a Sunday beach swim is the weekend Lekki does best.
Questions, answered
What is the best time to visit Lekki?
The dry season from November to March brings less rain and clearer skies, making beach days and the canopy walkway more reliable. December and January are busiest, so book hotels two to three weeks ahead and expect slower traffic.
Do I need a car to explore Lekki?
Ride-hailing works well in Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate, but coverage thins further east after dark. For the Conservation Centre and outlying beaches, a car with a driver for a day is the most efficient option.
How far is Lekki from Victoria Island?
The Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge puts Victoria Island roughly 15 to 20 minutes away outside rush hour. Allow an hour during the morning and evening peaks, when the toll gate and expressway slow considerably.
